Satu Viitanen is a native of Finland and has travelled extensively in Europe as a young adult before coming to the United States in 1979. Early in her career, she was engaged in graphic arts design, creating colorful wooden toys for toddlers as a co-founder of Lapland Toy Company. She devoted herself to the full time pursuit of visual arts in 1993 when she began painting on canvas, paper and wood using acrylic as her preferred medium because of its superior versatility. In 1996 Satu participated in her first juried art show and has since been invited to display her art in galleries and showrooms in San Francisco, Los Gatos, Carmel, San Luis Obispo and Los Angeles. Today, she displays her work in juried Bay Area art exhibitions as well as in selected galleries and other special venues. Satu has received, over the last decade, numerous awards for her works in both categories of painting and photographic compositions. One of her compositions, titled "Workbench I", was selected in 2009 by the City of Gilroy for its permanent collection. Her work can also be found in public places in the Bay Area and private collections around the world. In the area of paintings, she focuses on creating large canvas-tapestry wall hangings as well as multi-panel room divider-screens. Satu enjoys creating paintings with the detailed texture and feeling of old-world patina, surfaces reminiscent of the renaissance era. Her inspirations are often reflections of those earlier years of her travels through Europe. Satu is inspired by a variety of mediums in art; her latest efforts have expanded to photographic compositions. In photography, she seeks to capture nature and architectural elements in a unique and natural light. Most of her compositions are natural prints without enhancements. The essence of my photography is the mood or feel of a subject captured at a special moment in time. Combining delicate layers of light and shadow with the interplay of color and form helps convey the emotion of the scene as I perceived it. My goal in photography is a natural feel of the subject, hence, I tend to limit digital manipulations. Satu offers limited-edition studio prints of her photography using the highest-quality archival paper and inks.
"My personal goal has always been to work with a variety of art forms. Today, it brings me true satisfaction that I am able to create a wide range of paintings as well as color photographic compositions.
